Should I Become a Republican?

Well, here's the deal. I'm pretty sure that, in Illinois, you must declare some kind of party affiliation to vote in primaries - even if that's just asking for a Republican or Democrat ballot when you visit your polling place. Either way, I believe that once you do that, your name goes on some kind of list and behold! you are now affiliated with that party to some extent. This belief of mine is why I've never voted in primaries before. I don't want the local party office to come knocking at my door for stuff (i.e. money).

So, should I become a Republican? Now, don't be getting your panties all in a bunch. Hear me out: this would only be for the purposes of voting against Mitt Romney a/k/a "The mormon." I figure I could pick the least-likely Republican candidate and vote for him, which wouldn't do any real harm, but would be a vote against The mormon.

No! No! Don't do it. Mitt will send young men in black suits to your doorstep in retribution. Every Saturday afternoon. Forever.

Yes, you should, and you should vote for Ron Paul, the Libertarian.

Back to a gold standard? We'll go back to gold coins, just like D&D! Sign me up!

Good arguments for and against...damn. I was hoping this would be more clear-cut.

On a related question, if I have a gig playing with a band backing up a famous mormon, does that make me evil, too?

Jeff,

Only if you're doing it for free. If you're taking money from them, then that's okay.

Yes!!

I agree with Cory. You should get a Republican ballot and cast it for Ron Paul!

Mary,

Well, if anyone can get us back to the gold standard, it would be Ron. I'll have to check the polls closer to primary time - whoever is running last (or next to last) is who I'll pick.

One Ron Paul note: there was a house around here somewhere that we drive by. I noticed for several weeks that a Ron Paul support sign was in the yard. Last time we drove by it had been taken down and was lying forlornly by the side of their porch...

Interesting that the Ron Paul sign has lost its luster, much like a Christmas toy on Dec. 28th. However, a close inspection of the most recent polls reveals that you should go find that sign and put it in your yard. Near the border with your neighbor's yard.

In the grand scheme of things it probably isn't a big deal, but caucusing for someone that you wouldn't vote for sounds a bit dishonest. It may feel good in the short term to screw em, but at the end of the day you still have to look in the mirror.

Brando,

Damn....you got me when it comes to the morals of my plan. My only hope is to become a vampire and then I won't have to look at myself in the mirror!
